According to an article in
The Times and several online forum postings, some users are experiencing what appears to be teething problems with their new iPhone devices:
Threads on several Apple forums – including the company's own – have been devoted to the problem, which causes parts of the device's screen to go 'dead' and stop responding to the touch of a finger.
Typically the dead spot is a strip about half an inch wide that runs the width of the iPhone's screen as it is held vertically, users experiencing the problem said.
In one case, the strip ran across the Unlock button, which meant that the user was unable to answer the phone when it rang.

There's no indication in any of the reports as to how many owners are experiencing problems but given the volume of units shipped (over 1 million by mid-July) it doesn't seem unusual, particularly with new hardware, that there would be some failures.
Hopefully these bugs will be ironed out before the iPhone arrives here!
