Doncaster South CLC Evaluation Report

Doncaster South CLC have recently published a report and case study on a pilot project using a combination of O2 XDA IIs smart phones and RedHalo within a secondary school.

The project was launched in September 2006 to deliver the OCR Nationals ICT qualification to KS 4 students.

The pilot identified "vast benefits afforded by the employment of mobile technologies to support learning and the personalisation of learning service".

The report shows the benefit of devices that have multiple means for connectivity, in this case both Wi-Fi and GPRS.

This is an interesting report because it is using smart phones and their individual connections to the internet. I've often wondered how this might be an improvement to using the school wireless network which are often unreliable and almost impossible to manage between school and home.

There's also the benefit of not having to be concerned about whether the students have internet access at home because they can use the phone. However I wonder how such a project sits with the current concerns about using mobile phones in schools?

Well found - thanks Graham, this finding dovetails with the projects I carried out - the benefit of the PDA is its instant on access to information/knowledge bases anyplace you happen to be, much of their functionality isn't as good as the specific tool for the job but it can help out anywhere, anytime. Any news on cheaper mobile phone costs yet?
