There are all kinds of open source projects for mobile here - animation, mind mapping, rdc for mobile etc.

(Source forge being the parent - I just did the search for 'mobile'

You do need to look through carefully for those apps which are applicable to education - but none-the-less a valuable resource

Google are running a "Highly Open Participation Contest" for students age 13 or older who have not yet begun university studies
